if you’re looking for a little extra help to find the perfect location for your session, then this guide is for you. we’d love to make recommendations and find the best location that fits your vibe but are always, always open to new places!

phipps park

located on the northwest end of billings, this location has open fields, rims, rocks, hills, and like 3 trees. it’s a small walk from the parking lot to the field and then down into a small ravene or up into some rocks but it’s minimal walking. it does tend to get a little windy and cold in this area so be prepared to be chilly or bring extra layers.

four dances

four dances is a recreation area that borders the top of the rims on the east side of billings, along the river. if you hike to the very top of the plateau, you can overlook a bend in the river on one side and all of billings on the other. it’s a bit of a hike to the top of the plateau but if you want to stick around at the base of the trail, there are fields, trees, an old wooden fence, and plenty of really pretty areas to take photos at without hiking too far.

two big downfalls to four dances: the wind is constant at the top. if it’s any kind of cold outside, you can bet it’ll be 15-20 degrees colder at the top. this is not an ideal spot in the winter.
the plateau is also a cliff and sheer drop to the river below, making this not really a suitable location for families with small child who want to explore (pls note and laugh with me about my only photos of this area are with a small child who i promise really wanted to explore). but the views are breathtaking and i’ve been up here a handful of times and loved it every single time.

riverfront park/norms island

the quintessential fall photo location in billings because of all the trees. leafy trees, a field bordered by pine trees, and areas to walk around.

zimmerman park/acton recreation area/below the rims

three similar vibes with the dry grass and open fields and rocky areas, no leafy trees and a few pine trees.

zimmerman and the field below are easily walkable and you don’t have to walk very far beyond the parking lots to have a few good spots for photos.
acton rec area is about a 45-min drive outside of billings and is similar to zimmerman park, just a bigger area, less people, more sage brush, and more backgrounds of rolling hills and trees vs open sky and the city.

downtown billings

very clearly a big fan of the top of the parking garage and all the brick walls downtown. this is a fun area where you can walk as much or as little as you want and find murals or walls covered in ivy or run through the streets or just sit on a curb.
